The Yukon Territory has a small population spread over a large geographic area. In order to provide service to outlying Yukon communities, a court party travels to many communities on a “Circuit”. In Circuit Courts, judges, defence counsel, and prosecutors travel to communities outside of Whitehorse on a predetermined schedule. If you live in a Yukon community or have been charged with an offence in a Yukon community, your matter may be heard by a Circuit Court.
A designated defence lawyer is provided by Yukon Legal Services Society for each circuit. Designated defence counsel will provide summary advice to all persons on the Circuit. If the matter proceeds to trial, Yukon Legal Services Society eligibility criteria will apply. Please call the administration office in advance to find out which lawyer has been assigned and when you can meet with the lawyer prior to court.
